Whale Emergency
Using a spring loaded pole knife of his own invention, Chris Slay cuts away at the fishing chords choking the body of an endangered female Right Whale. There is limited time, because in this event, she has been shot with a tranquilizer dart. This unusual sedation protects the rescuers from her frantic thrashing, turning, and spinning as she struggles for freedom. In this precious window of time the mitigators at Coastwise Consulting, Inc. work double-time to disentangle her whilst keeping her above the surface, and breathing.

Endangered Green Turtle
The green turtle is one of the largest sea turtles and the only herbivore among the different species. Green turtles are in fact named for the greenish color of their cartilage and fat, not their shells. Like other sea turtles, they migrate long distances between feeding grounds and the beaches from where they hatched. Classified as endangered, green turtles are threatened by overharvesting of their eggs, hunting of adults, being caught in fishing gear and loss of nesting beach sites.

Imperiled Species Trawling
Relocation trawling utilizes specialized nets and limited tow times to ensure turtles are caught safely and relocated a minimum of 3 miles away from the active dredging sites.

Observers
Protected Species Observers (PSOs) are professionals who provide a range of environmental consulting services dealing with regulatory compliance for a wide range of industries (Geophysical, Dredging, Construction, Telecommunications, Research, etc.). PSOs are involved in a wide range of monitoring activities such as standard visual monitoring, passive and active acoustic monitoring, aerial surveys, dirigible and ROV surveys among others. Many terms are used for observers (e.g. Marine Mammal Observers [MMO], Marine Mammal & Seabird Observers [MMSO], Endangered Species Observers [ESO], Dredge Observers, Marine Fauna Observers [MFO], Monitors, etc…)
The main role of the Protected Species Observer is to enable compliance in accordance with the stipulated mitigation measures of the project, to document and report regarding the compliance aspects and to act as a source of information on marine wildlife and other environmental matters associated with the project. They are responsible, impartial and unbiased during operations that require mitigation efforts and reporting.
Although the majority of the PSO focus revolves around Marine Mammals and Sea Turtles PSOs often deal with a number of other wildlife groups including most commonly birds and fish and at times even associated cultural issues depending on the type of industry, project and location.
