<image:title>Endangered Species Marine Monitoring & Mitigation - ABOUT - Coastwise has been a leader in environmental consulting for 30+ years.</image:title>
<image:caption>Coastwise Consulting, founded in 1991 by Chris Slay, was originally established to provide the marine construction industry with guidance, monitoring and mitigation for projects that potentially impact protected species. Over the years, Coastwise has provided imperiled species monitoring, necessitated by the Endangered Species Act and the Marine Mammal Protection Act, for projects at every major port entrance from Bath, Maine to Brazos, Texas. Research, logistical support, education and mitigation efforts are now provided to wide variety of clients, from state and federal agencies to NGO’s such as the National Geographic Society.</image:caption>

<image:title>Endangered Species Marine Monitoring & Mitigation - ABOUT - We protect & serve wildlife</image:title>
<image:caption>The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has contracted Coastwise to census endangered shorebirds, especially wood storks and other large wading species using aerial surveys. NOAA Fisheries relied on Coastwise for aerial surveys to monitor sea turtle abundance and commercial fishing activity offshore of Chesapeake Bay, VA. Coastwise not only monitors but mitigates, safely capturing and relocating endangered sea turtles and sturgeon from dredge sites using commercial shrimp trawlers. Over 2000 sea turtles have been successfully tagged and relocated from harm’s way. Coastwise also provides programs and material for educating the public and private sector about marine endangered species issues. Research and education are becoming as integral to the operations of Coastwise as mitigation and monitoring have been from the outset, serving federal, state and local agencies.</image:caption>

<image:title>Endangered Species Marine Monitoring & Mitigation - ABOUT - Resource to the US Navy</image:title>
<image:caption>Coastwise Consulting provided environmental mitigation support to BAE Systems during the US Navy’s Ship Shock Trial of the DDG-81 USS Winston S. Churchill in 2001. Booz Allen Hamilton contracted Coastwise in 2008 to oversee environmental planning and monitoring of the Navy’s Ship Shock Trial of the LPD-19, USS Mesa Verde. Slay acted as the Lead Environmental Scientist, providing guidance on the location of the Trial and the overall design of the mitigation effort. Coastwise provided all observers and animal rescue teams for the project. There were three at-sea detonations of 5-ton bombs to test hull and systems capabilities on the LPD-19. Intensive shipboard monitoring and aerial surveys were employed to prevent injuries to marine wildlife. Despite weeks of daily shipboard and aerial surveys, no injuries or mortalities associated with this work were found. Coastwise was honored with an Excellence Award from the USN, LPD Program Manager.</image:caption>

<image:title>Endangered Species Marine Monitoring & Mitigation - ABOUT - Chris Slay, Founder</image:title>
<image:caption>Chris Slay has worked with endangered marine species for 28 years and served as a Research Scientist with the New England Aquarium, a leading public education and research facility in Boston, for 15 years. He designed and managed large-scale aerial survey efforts for endangered marine animals, some of which are still being conducted for right whales along the southeast coast during the calving season. He led a tagging program, successfully designing, developing and deploying remote sensing systems for marine mammals, including satellite-telemetry and VHF-radio tags for whales.</image:caption>

<image:title>Endangered Species Marine Monitoring & Mitigation - Ship Island Project - Reconnecting THE barrier</image:title>
<image:caption>A key component of this program is reconnecting two gulf coast barrier islands located approximately 10 miles off the Mississippi mainland. This component of the MsCIP is creating a single robust barrier island by connecting East and West Ship Islands into what was historically a single island, Ship Island. Hopper dredges facilitated beach renourishment, digging in borrow areas, predetermined by the USACE as capable of providing ideal beach sediment. Sand is extracted from the borrow areas and pumped ashore to expand beaches.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To reduce sea turtle mortality associated with hopper dredging operations, relocation trawling was performed during the entirety of the project. Trawlers tow nets in areas where dredging is actively or imminently occurring in order to proactively capture and relocate turtles safely away construction areas. Relocation trawling utilizes specialized nets and limited tow times to capture turtles are caught safely and relocated a minimum of 3 miles away from the active dredging sites.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If a sea turtle is captured, it is brought on board and processed. This includes; a basic physical exam, the recording of standard measurements, specimen tagging by means of Inconel (if > 30cm CCL) and PIT tags (if no previous tags are found), photographs, and genetic biopsies. Once processed the turtle is relocated at least 3 miles away from any active borrow areas and released.</image:caption>

<image:title>Endangered Species Marine Monitoring & Mitigation - Ship Island Project - SuCCESSFUL Relocation of 380 Endangered Species</image:title>
<image:caption>Between 24 November 2017 and 17 January 2019, two relocation trawlers operated a total of 688 days conducting 14,762 individual tows. These efforts resulted in 380 capture & relocation events, successfully moving 378 sea turtles out of harm’s way. Two sturgeon were also relocated on this project. Kemp’s Ridley Turtles (Lepidochelys kempii, Lk) made up the majority, totaling 264 captures. Followed second by Loggerhead Turtles (Caretta caretta, Cc) with 107, then Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas, Cm) with 6 and finally a single Leatherback Turtles(Dermochelys coriacea, Dc). Of these captures, 9 were identified as males from indicative external features, while 59 were noted to have evidence of old, healed wounds. There were 23 total recaptures of turtles, 17 from within the project itself. Project recaptures intervals range from 2 to 304 days, with an average of 68 days.</image:caption>

<image:title>action - Endangered Green Turtle</image:title>
<image:caption>The green turtle is one of the largest sea turtles and the only herbivore among the different species. Green turtles are in fact named for the greenish color of their cartilage and fat, not their shells. Like other sea turtles, they migrate long distances between feeding grounds and the beaches from where they hatched. Classified as endangered, green turtles are threatened by overharvesting of their eggs, hunting of adults, being caught in fishing gear and loss of nesting beach sites.</image:caption>

<image:title>action - Observers</image:title>
<image:caption>Protected Species Observers (PSOs) are professionals who provide a range of environmental consulting services dealing with regulatory compliance for a wide range of industries (Geophysical, Dredging, Construction, Telecommunications, Research, etc.). PSOs are involved in a wide range of monitoring activities such as standard visual monitoring, passive and active acoustic monitoring, aerial surveys, dirigible and ROV surveys among others. Many terms are used for observers (e.g. Marine Mammal Observers [MMO], Marine Mammal & Seabird Observers [MMSO], Endangered Species Observers [ESO], Dredge Observers, Marine Fauna Observers [MFO], Monitors, etc…) The main role of the Protected Species Observer is to enable compliance in accordance with the stipulated mitigation measures of the project, to document and report regarding the compliance aspects and to act as a source of information on marine wildlife and other environmental matters associated with the project. They are responsible, impartial and unbiased during operations that require mitigation efforts and reporting. Although the majority of the PSO focus revolves around Marine Mammals and Sea Turtles PSOs often deal with a number of other wildlife groups including most commonly birds and fish and at times even associated cultural issues depending on the type of industry, project and location.</image:caption>
